✦ Storage in the AI RackThin moat
Dell Technologies (DELL) — the future bets
Dell's storage line grew 26% in a quarter after three years without growth, the first sign that AI clusters may pull storage with them.
Dell is betting that AI projects will need its storage as well as its servers. Storage revenue was $4,850 million in the second quarter of fiscal 2027, up 26% from $3,856 million1, after $4,334 million in the first quarter, up 8%2.
The line needs the help. Storage sold $17,958 million in fiscal 2023 and $16,631 million in fiscal 202634, and grew only 1% in fiscal 2026, which Dell attributed to its core storage offerings5. The Revenue Lines page for storage tells the longer story of the EMC acquisition that built it.
The logic of the bet is attachment. An AI cluster produces and consumes very large amounts of data, and a customer buying the servers from Dell is a natural buyer of the storage beside them. If that happens, storage would ride the AI wave with a richer margin than the servers.
Two quarters are not a trend. The first quarter's 8% growth was modest; the second quarter's 26% came in a period when memory and component prices were rising6, which lifts reported revenue for storage systems as well.
Storage is shrinking as a share of the infrastructure business even when it grows. It was about 48% of ISG revenue in fiscal 2024, $16,261 million of $33,885 million78, and about 15% in the second quarter of fiscal 2027, $4,850 million of $31,782 million910.
The quarterly storage revenue figure, $4,850 million in the latest quarter11, is the test. Two more quarters of growth above 15% would mean AI is pulling storage along; a return to low single digits would mean the second quarter was price and timing.
Storage +26% in Q2 FY2027 after +1% in FY2026.
Whether AI pulls storage; a return to low single-digit growth would mean the jump was price and timing.
