✦ The Future BetsNarrow moat

Dell Technologies (DELL) — the future bets

Dell has raised its fiscal 2027 revenue forecast twice since February, to $192 billion, betting that the AI wave keeps running ahead of its own guidance.

Dell's future bets are unusually explicit, because it keeps raising its forecast. In February 2026 it guided fiscal 2027 revenue of $138 to $142 billion, with AI servers of roughly $50 billion1. In May it raised that to $165 to $169 billion and roughly $60 billion2. In September it raised it again, to $192.0 billion and $74.0 billion, with GAAP earnings of $24.37 a share3.

FY2027 revenue guidance midpoint by date ($bn)140Feb 2026167May 2026192Sep 2026Dell results releases, Q4 FY2026, Q1 FY2027, Q2 FY2027
Raised by $52 billion in seven months.

That forecast would be up about 69% on fiscal 2026 revenue of $113,538 million4. Its AI part would be about three times the $24,683 million of fiscal 202656, and the rest of the business would also have to grow by about a third7.

Four bets carry it. The first is delivering the second half, which the guidance implies at about $101 billion of revenue8. The second is converting AI orders into $74 billion of AI revenue. The third is a commercial PC refresh, visible in a 22% rise in commercial revenue in the latest quarter9. The fourth is storage, which grew 26% in the latest quarter10 after years without growth.

None of these is a new moat. They are bets on the size of the current wave and on Dell's ability to ship it.

Management frames the bets as mutually reinforcing. The chief financial officer said in September that "Our advantages reinforce one another"11, and the chief operating officer that customers now see technology as a value driver rather than a cost centre12. The guidance is where that confidence is tested: two raises in seven months mean the company has consistently underestimated its own demand, which is the pattern of a boom rather than of a plan.

The guidance is the number that summarises them: $192.0 billion13. A third raise in December would say demand is still running ahead of Dell's own forecasts; a cut would say the wave has crested sooner than the company expected.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Guidance raised from $140bn to $167bn to $192bn.

The company's own forecast; a third raise signals demand still ahead of plan, a cut that the wave has crested.
