Dell Technologies (DELL) — threat to the moat

Dell's server lead was close to a tie with Supermicro through 2025 and jumped only when a few very large AI buyers placed orders.

Dell's server leadership is recent enough to be fragile. Across calendar 2025 IDC put Dell at about 10% of sales and Supermicro at 9.5%1, close to a tie. In the first quarter of 2026 Dell's share was 16.5% after revenue growth of 244.1%2.

Dell far outgrew a record market.

Share that jumps on one kind of order can fall on the same kind. The growth came from AI systems bought by a relatively small number of large customers and cloud service providers3, and each of those buyers can move a large project to another vendor next time.

The ODM direct channel is the other swing factor. It dropped from 64.1% to 50.2% of server revenue in a year4. If the largest cloud companies go back to building their own designs through contract manufacturers, that share returns and Dell's shrinks.

Dell's filing warns in general terms that its "market share may rapidly erode"5. In servers the warning has a specific shape: the share was won on a few very large orders, and it can be lost on the next few.

The next four quarters of IDC data are the test. A Dell share that settles above 12% would say the lead is structural; one that drifts back toward 10% would mean it was rented for a season.
