Scale in the Server RoomNarrow moat

Dell Technologies (DELL) — moat facet

Dell became the largest branded server maker by shipping AI clusters fast, but it earns an assembler's margin on parts others design.

Dell's strongest competitive position today is in data-centre hardware, and the AI build-out has made it much stronger. Its infrastructure segment, ISG, sold $33,885 million in fiscal 2024 and $60,826 million in fiscal 20261, and $60,791 million in the first half of fiscal 2027 alone, up 124%2. IDC ranked Dell first in worldwide server revenue in the first quarter of 2026, with 16.5%3.

ISG revenue by fiscal year ($M)34,366FY202238,356FY202333,885FY202443,593FY202560,826FY2026Dell Technologies Forms 10-K FY2024 and FY2026
The infrastructure segment nearly doubled in two years.

The growth came from AI-optimized servers, which went from $1,873 million in fiscal 2024 to $24,683 million in fiscal 20264, and from a backlog that stood at $95 billion at the end of July 20265. Conventional servers and networking also grew, $19,512 million in fiscal 20266 and $10,531 million in the second quarter of fiscal 2027, up 122%7.

The moat in this business is scale in purchasing, manufacturing and support, not ownership of the key technology. Dell buys the processors, accelerators and memory; it builds, delivers, finances and services the systems. When parts are scarce, as they have been, the buyer with the largest orders and the most dependable supply chain gets served first, and large customers pay for a vendor that can deliver a cluster on time.

That kind of moat has limits. It earns an assembler's margin: ISG's operating margin was 11.7% in fiscal 2026, down from 12.8%8. It depends on a few very large customers. And it swings: the segment's quarterly margin ranged from 8.8% to 15.0% over the past five reported quarters9.

The infrastructure business has grown about fourfold in eleven years. It sold $14,714 million in fiscal 2015, with servers and networking at $12,368 million and storage at $2,346 million10, against $60,826 million in fiscal 202611. Most of that came in two steps: the EMC storage business in fiscal 2017 and the AI servers in fiscal 2025 and 2026.

ISG now carries the company. It produced about 72% of Dell's segment operating income in fiscal 2026, against about 54% two years earlier12, and 81% in the second quarter of fiscal 202713. The segment's quarterly operating margin, 15.0% in the latest quarter14, is the measure that separates a moat from a boom: if it holds above 12% as AI revenue keeps rising, scale is paying; if it sinks back below 10%, Dell is buying share at its own expense.

Moat trajectory: Widening

ISG revenue +124% in H1 FY2027; IDC share 16.5%.

Whether scale pays; a fall back below 10% as AI mix rises would mean the growth is bought with margin.
