Dell Technologies (DELL) — threat to the moat

Dell's PCs are made mostly abroad and sold mostly in America on a 5.6% margin, leaving little room for tariffs.

Dell's filing names trade policy as a direct risk to its costs: "Trade policies and disputes could result in increased tariffs and other trade restrictions", which it says could raise its manufacturing costs1. PCs are the product most exposed, because they are built largely by contract manufacturers abroad and sold in large volumes at thin margins.

Little margin left to absorb a tariff.

The United States is Dell's largest market, $63,140 million of revenue in fiscal 20262, about 56% of the total3. Every tariff on imported machines lands on that revenue.

A segment earning a 5.6% operating margin4 has little room to absorb a tariff. Dell would have to raise prices, which it has shown it can do with business customers, or accept a lower margin.

The manufacturing base is concentrated where tariffs bite. Dell's filing says significant portions of its products are assembled by contract manufacturers "primarily in locations in Asia"5, and many of its component vendors are located outside the United States.

The test would be a tariff change on imported PCs. A quarter in which CSG's margin falls below 5% after such a change would show Dell could not pass the cost through.
