AI Servers: $1.9 Billion to $24.7 BillionNarrow moat

Dell Technologies (DELL) — moat facet

Dell's AI server revenue rose about thirteenfold in two years, and it came from shipping more units, not charging more for them.

Nothing in Dell's recent history compares with the growth of its AI-optimized servers. The line sold $1,873 million in fiscal 2024, $9,286 million in fiscal 2025 and $24,683 million in fiscal 20261. That is roughly thirteen times in two years, and in fiscal 2026 the line was about a fifth of all Dell revenue and about 41% of its infrastructure segment2.

Thirteen times in two years.

The quarters show how steep the climb was. AI-optimized servers sold $1,882 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2026 and $16,132 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, up 757%3. In the second quarter of fiscal 2027 they sold $16,401 million, double the $8,208 million of a year earlier4, and for the first time made up more than half of the infrastructure segment's revenue5.

Dell's own explanation is plain. The fiscal 2026 increase was "primarily driven by an increase in units sold"6. This was not a price story. Customers wanted racks of accelerated servers delivered and running, and Dell had the factories, the supply contracts and the field engineers to deliver them in volume.

The moat argument here is about execution at scale rather than about a product nobody else can build. An AI server is assembled from chips, memory and networking that Dell buys from others. What Dell sells is the ability to turn those parts into working clusters quickly, finance them, and support them afterwards. That is why the growth came in units: buyers who needed capacity by a date went to the supplier that could ship it.

The second half of fiscal 2026 was the turning point. Dell said it shipped "more than $25 billion throughout the year" in AI servers and entered fiscal 2027 with a record backlog of $43 billion7. The first quarter of fiscal 2026 had brought only $1,882 million of AI revenue8, so almost all of the year's shipments came in its last three quarters.

The growth has a known cost, which the next page takes up: the segment's margin rate fell as the mix moved toward these servers9. The quarterly AI revenue figure is the one to follow. It flattened between the first and second quarters of fiscal 2027, $16,132 million to $16,401 million1011; a second flat quarter while orders keep rising would mean the constraint is Dell's delivery, not demand.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Q2 FY2027 AI server revenue $16.4bn, double a year earlier; FY2027 guide $74bn.
