⚠ A Dividend Dell Says It May Not KeepLow threat
Dell Technologies (DELL) — threat to the moat
Dell warns it may not keep paying its dividend at the current rate, and every recent raise came in a profitable year.
Dell's dividend comes with an explicit warning. The 10-K says Dell "may not continue to pay cash dividends or to pay cash dividends at the same rate as announced in February 2026"1. That is standard language, but it is worth taking literally in a hardware company whose earnings have swung from losses to records within a decade.
Dell reported net losses in every fiscal year from 2015 to 201923. Every dividend increase in its recent record, 20%, 18% and 20%45, came in a profitable year.
The payout is covered comfortably today: about 25% of net income in fiscal 20266. The risk is not the next year but the next downturn, when the board would have to choose between the dividend, the buybacks and debt reduction.
The cash cost is rising fast. Dividends paid were $1,072 million in fiscal 2024, $1,275 million in fiscal 2025 and $1,459 million in fiscal 20267. At the new $0.63 quarterly rate the bill will be higher again in fiscal 2027.
What would test it is a year of falling earnings. If Dell kept raising the dividend through such a year, the warning was boilerplate; if it froze it, the dividend is a function of the cycle.
