Consumer: $15.9 Billion to $6.9 BillionThin moat
Dell Technologies (DELL) — moat facet
Dell's consumer PC revenue fell 56% in four years on lower prices and fewer units, the signature of a business without an edge.
Dell's consumer PC business has been shrinking for four years. Revenue was $15,888 million in fiscal 2022, $12,657 million in fiscal 2023, $9,102 million in fiscal 20241, $7,549 million in fiscal 2025 and $6,922 million in fiscal 20262, a fall of about 56%3. It was about 16% of revenue in fiscal 2022 and about 6% in fiscal 20264.
Dell explains the latest decline as "a decline in average selling prices and units sold"5. That is the combination that signals a weak position: fewer buyers, each paying less.
The consumer market does not reward Dell's strengths. Its direct sales force and support contracts matter little to someone buying a laptop in a shop or online, where price and brand decide, and where the larger PC makers and Apple compete hard. Dell's scale advantage over its own consumer rivals is small.
The decline has not been all bad for the company as a whole. It has pulled Dell's mix toward commercial buyers and infrastructure, where the relationships are deeper. The second quarter of fiscal 2027 brought a small rise, $1,842 million against $1,722 million, up 7%6.
The early months of fiscal 2027 were a little better. Consumer revenue was $1,589 million in the first quarter, against $1,463 million a year earlier7, a rise of about 9%8, and $1,842 million in the second9. Two quarters of growth after four years of decline are worth noting, but much of it coincided with rising component prices.
Consumer PCs are no longer a moat business for Dell, if they ever were. The quarterly revenue figure, $1,842 million in the latest quarter10, will show whether the fall has ended; a return to declines would confirm the line is being run for cash rather than for share.
Consumer down from $15.9bn to $6.9bn; +7% in Q2 FY2027.
Whether the decline has ended; renewed falls would confirm the line is being run for cash.
