Revenue Up 20%, Units Down 5%Thin moat
Dell Technologies (DELL) — moat facet
Dell's PC revenue rose 20% in a quarter when it shipped 5% fewer machines, so the growth was price that the component cycle may take back.
Dell's client segment grew fast in the second quarter of fiscal 2027 while shipping fewer PCs. Client revenue was $15,034 million, up about 20% from $12,503 million12. In the same calendar quarter, IDC estimated Dell's PC shipments at 9.3 million units, down 5%3.
The gap has to be price and configuration. Memory costs rose sharply in 2026, and Dell's quarterly filing refers to "substantial inflation in memory component costs"4. A PC maker that can pass those costs through, and sell richer machines at the same time, grows revenue even as volume falls.
Passing costs through is a form of pricing power, and that is worth noting. The segment's operating income rose to $1,142 million from $803 million5, so Dell passed on more than the cost increase. Its business customers accepted higher prices rather than switching.
It is a weak form, though, because it depends on every PC maker facing the same costs and raising prices together. IDC recorded the whole market down 4.9% in the quarter6, so Dell's rivals were in the same position.
The quarter was also the market's first decline in some time. MacTrast's report of the IDC figures noted that overall PC shipments "declined for the first time in two years"7. Dell grew revenue sharply in a falling market, which is the clearest sign that the growth was price.
This is the clearest current test of Dell's position with PC buyers. The comparison between revenue and units is the thing to track: if memory prices ease and Dell's revenue falls faster than its units, the pricing was borrowed from the component cycle and will be handed back.
CSG revenue +20% with units -5% in the quarter.
Pricing pass-through; revenue falling faster than units later would show it was borrowed from memory prices.
