Dell Technologies (DELL) — threat to the moat

Dell itself warns that AI orders and shipments arrive in lumps, and one slipped project can move a quarter by billions.

Dell does not pretend its AI business is smooth. Its latest quarterly filing says "there is inherent non-linearity in the timing of demand and subsequent shipments for our AI-optimized servers offerings"1. The quarterly record bears it out.

AI server orders by quarter ($bn)3.6Q3 FY2512.1Q1 FY2612.3Q3 FY26~34Q4 FY2624.4Q1 FY2760.9Q2 FY27Dell results releases; Q4 FY2026 derived from full-year orders of more than $64bn
Orders arrive in lumps.

AI server revenue was $1,882 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2026, $8,208 million in the second, $8,952 million in the fourth, $16,132 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2027 and $16,401 million in the second234. Orders were even lumpier, from $12.3 billion in one quarter to about $34 billion in the next56.

Lumpy revenue makes the business harder to plan and harder to value. A few large projects slipping by a quarter can move the segment's results by billions, and the infrastructure margin swung between 8.8% and 15.0% over five quarters7.

Even the quiet quarters are revealing. Dell reported $30 billion of AI orders across the first three quarters of fiscal 20268, with $12.1 billion in the first and $12.3 billion in the third910, which leaves only about $5.6 billion for the second11. A business that can book $5.6 billion one quarter and $60.9 billion a year later is hard to forecast from any single period.

The danger is not the lumps themselves but mistaking one for a trend. What would expose it is a quarter in which AI orders fall below AI revenue, the first time since the wave began that the backlog would shrink.
