⚠ The VMware Resale Revenue That Went AwayLow threat

Dell Technologies (DELL) — threat to the moat

Dell lost most of a $5.6 billion revenue line when Broadcom bought VMware, a reminder that resold revenue belongs to the maker.

Some of what looked like Dell's recurring revenue belonged to a partner. Dell resold VMware software for years; VMware was acquired by Broadcom on 22 November 2023, and Dell terminated its Commercial Framework Agreement with VMware on 25 March 20241.

Corporate and other revenue ($M)5,624FY20243,581FY20251,728FY2026Dell Technologies Form 10-K FY2026, segment note
Down more than two-thirds.

The effect is visible in the corporate and other line, which holds businesses Dell no longer actively sells, including VMware resale, Secureworks and Virtustream2. Its revenue was $5,624 million in fiscal 2024, $3,581 million in fiscal 2025 and $1,728 million in fiscal 20263, down about 69%4.

The lesson for the moat is that a line built on reselling someone else's product is only as durable as the relationship. When the partner changed hands, the revenue went.

Other exits followed the same logic. Dell sold Boomi on 1 October 20215 and Secureworks was acquired by Sophos on 3 February 20256, bringing Dell about $533 million of divestiture proceeds in fiscal 20267. Each sale made Dell more of a hardware and support company.

What remains is small and shrinking. The corporate and other line matters now mainly as a drag on reported growth; if it reaches near zero in fiscal 2027, the drag ends and Dell's services figures become a cleaner read on its own installed base.
