Global Wealth & Investment ManagementNarrow moat
Bank of America (BAC) — moat facet
Merrill and the Private Bank earn $24.9 billion of mostly fee revenue but keep less of it than any other part of Bank of America.
Global Wealth & Investment Management is Bank of America's fee business, and its steadiest grower. It produced revenue of $24,883 million and net income of $4,670 million in 20251, about 21.9% of segment revenue2.
It has two businesses, Merrill Wealth Management and Bank of America Private Bank3. Merrill produced $20,716 million of revenue and the Private Bank $4,167 million in 20254. Merrill serves clients with over $250,000 in total investable assets5.
It is paid mostly in fees on client assets. Noninterest income was $17,686 million of 2025 revenue and net interest income $7,197 million6. Client balances were $4,751,394 million at the end of 2025 and $4,934.4 billion in June 202678; assets under management, on which advisory fees are charged, were $2,177,708 million at the end of 20259.
The history is slow, then faster. Revenue was $18,034 million in 2015 and $19,538 million in 2019, as reported then1011, then $21,105 million in 2023 and $24,883 million in 202512. Net client flows into assets under management were $79,227 million in 2024 and $81,997 million in 202513.
Profitability is the weakness. Net income was about 18.8% of revenue in 202514, the lowest of the four segments. The pretax margin was 27% in the second quarter of 202615.
The outlook depends on markets and on the consumer bank's pipeline. Revenue grew about 17.9% from 2023 to 202516, and client balances rose further in 2026.
Assets under management are growing faster than balances. They reached $2.3 trillion in June 2026, up 17%17, against client balances of $4.93 trillion18. A rising share of balances under management is the richest kind of growth this segment can have, because advisory fees are charged on those assets and not on the rest.
Call it a narrow moat that grows with the market. Net client flows would be the first place a weakening showed: a year well below the 2024-2025 pace of about $80 billion while markets rose would say clients were leaving for rivals.
Revenue $21.1bn (2023) to $24.9bn (2025); AUM +17% in Q2 2026.
The fee business's size; a fall in a rising market would mean clients were leaving.
