The $237 Billion That Started Earning InterestNarrow moat

Bank of America (BAC) — moat facet

A third of Bank of America's free deposits started earning interest when rates rose, and only in 2026 did the free money begin to grow again.

The most valuable deposit is one that pays nothing, and Bank of America lost a large slice of them when rates rose. Average noninterest-bearing deposits were $751,470 million in 2022, $583,484 million in 2023, $513,365 million in 2024 and $514,477 million in 202512. The decline from 2022 to 2025 was about $237 billion3.

A pandemic surge, then a third gone.

Total deposits did not leave; they changed character. Average total deposits were about $1.99 trillion in 2022 and $1.98 trillion in 20254. What happened was that customers moved money from accounts that paid nothing into accounts that paid something, and the share of deposits bearing no interest fell from 38.9% in 2021 to 25.9% in 20255.

That shift is the main reason the bank's cost of deposits rose so far. Interest-bearing deposits cost 2.35% in 2025 and 2.72% in 20246. Each dollar that moved from a free account to one paying over two percent cost the bank the full spread.

The erosion has stopped. Average noninterest-bearing deposits were essentially flat in 20257, and in the second quarter of 2026 management reported noninterest-bearing growth of $19 billion, up 4%8. That is the first real evidence that the cheapest money has found its floor.

The pandemic explains the peak as much as rates explain the decline. Average noninterest-bearing deposits were $401,269 million in 2019 and $744,035 million in 2021910, as government support and lower spending swelled checking balances. Part of the fall since 2022 is that money being spent or moved, not only customers seeking yield.

The noninterest-bearing share is the test. If it holds near a quarter of deposits through the next rate move, the franchise has settled at a new level; if it falls toward a fifth, the free money is still leaving and the funding advantage is shrinking with it.
