Global BankingNarrow moat

Bank of America (BAC) — moat facet

Global Banking's profit fell by nearly a quarter in two years, and it now earns the lowest return of Bank of America's four businesses.

Global Banking is Bank of America's corporate bank, and its profit has fallen for two years. It produced revenue of $24,108 million and net income of $7,793 million in 2025, against $24,555 million and $10,072 million in 20231.

Global Banking revenue, as reported ($M)17,621201520,483201922,229202224,555202324,1082025Bank of America Forms 10-K, each year as reported; 2023-2025 restated basis
Revenue flat since 2023.

The segment serves middle-market companies, commercial real estate firms, not-for-profits, large global corporations, financial institutions and leasing clients2. It provides lending, treasury services and investment banking; investment banking economics are shared with Global Markets under an internal revenue-sharing arrangement3.

It is paid two ways. Net interest income, mostly the spread on corporate deposits and loans, was $12,611 million in 2025; noninterest income, including treasury and investment banking fees, was $11,497 million4. Average deposits were $651.9 billion in the second quarter of 20265.

The history shows the rate cycle in reverse. Revenue was $17,621 million in 2015 and $22,229 million in 2022, as reported then67; net income peaked at $9,814 million in 2021, when reserve releases flattered it8. On the restated basis, net income has fallen about 23% from 2023 to 20259 as corporate deposits cost more and the provision for credit losses was $943 million in 202510.

It is profitable, at about 32.3% of revenue in 202511, but it returned only 15% on its allocated capital in the second quarter of 202612, the lowest of the four segments.

The outlook depends on investment banking. The bank ranked third in investment banking fees for 202513, and total corporation fees rose 50% in the second quarter of 202614; Global Banking earned $2,046 million that quarter15.

The corporate bank's reach is wide. The bank has relationships with 78% of the Global Fortune 500 and 96% of the U.S. Fortune 1,00016. Commercial reservable criticized exposure, the loans the bank is watching most closely, fell by $5.8 billion to $22.1 billion in the year to June 202617.

The investment banking fees the segment shares with Global Markets rose sharply in 2026. Total corporation fees were $2.1 billion in the second quarter, up 50%18, and the segment's first-half net income was $4,133 million192021.

Global Banking has a narrow moat, earned through corporate relationships rather than cheap funding. A return on allocated capital back above 20% would show it had repaired; one stuck at 15% would say the corporate bank was a drag on the return gap.

Moat trajectory: Narrowing

Net income $10.1bn (2023) to $7.8bn (2025); ROAC 15% in Q2 2026.

The corporate bank's return; a move above 20% would show it had repaired, a stall would keep it the weakest segment.
