JPMorgan: The Same Deposits, a Better BankNarrow moat
Bank of America (BAC) — moat facet
JPMorgan has about a quarter more deposits than Bank of America and earns nearly twice as much from them.
JPMorgan is the rival that proves what a large American deposit franchise can earn, and it does so on funding that costs slightly more than Bank of America's. The deposit comparison has its own page, Cheaper Than JPMorgan, and It Does Not Show; what matters here is the size of the business built on top.
JPMorgan earned net income of $57,048 million on total net revenue of $182,447 million in 20251. Bank of America earned $30,509 million on $113,097 million2. JPMorgan's year-end deposits were $2,559,320 million3, about 27% more than Bank of America's $2,018,729 million45, yet its revenue was about 61% larger6. The extra revenue comes from the businesses built on the deposits, not from the deposits themselves.
The market prices the difference. JPMorgan was worth $935.79 billion in September 20267, about 2.4 times Bank of America's $391.80 billion89, and traded at 14.5 times earnings against 12.710.
The gap did not narrow in the latest quarter. JPMorgan reported return on tangible common equity of 29%, or 23% excluding significant items, and an overhead ratio of 48% in the second quarter of 202611; Bank of America reported 17.03% and 59%1213.
The market-value gap is recent in its size. At the end of 2023 Bank of America was worth $266.46 billion14; its value has risen by about half since, but JPMorgan's lead in dollars has grown with it.
This is a rivalry Bank of America is not losing customers in; it is losing the argument about what a bank can earn. The revenue gap is the one to follow: if Bank of America's revenue grew faster than JPMorgan's for several years, the difference would be closing where it actually lives.
ROTCE 17.03% vs JPMorgan 23% ex items in Q2 2026.
The size of the fee and markets businesses built on similar deposits; a narrowing gap would mean Bank of America is catching up where it trails.
