Bank of America (BAC) — threat to the moat

At its 2025 pace Bank of America's low-yielding bond book would take about fourteen years to disappear.

The arithmetic of runoff is slow. With $505,828 million of held-to-maturity securities left in June 20261 and paydowns of $34,794 million in 20252, the book would take about 14.5 years to run off at that pace3.

Mostly mortgages, which repay slowly.

Most of it is agency mortgage-backed securities, $395,415 million of amortised cost at the end of 20254. Their repayment depends on homeowners selling or refinancing, which slows when mortgage rates are high.

A long runoff means the low yields stay in net interest income for years. The bank's net interest yield was 2.01% in 20255, and part of what holds it down is assets bought when ten-year yields were far lower.

The bank's own guidance points to the same slow tailwind. It expects net interest income to grow, and it names fixed-rate asset repricing as a driver6; the slower the runoff, the longer that driver keeps working, and the longer the old yields hold income down.

The annual paydown figure in the cash flow statement is the one to track. A figure well below $35 billion would stretch the drag further; a rise would say repayments had picked up and the repricing tailwind was arriving faster.
