Bank of America (BAC) — threat to the moat

At under 2% a year of net new money, Merrill's growth depends more on the stock market than on winning clients.

Net flows of $81,997 million in 20251 were about 1.9% of the $4,252,106 million of client balances at the start of the year2. At that rate organic growth takes decades to double the book; everything faster comes from markets.

Net flows as a share of opening balances (%)1.9%2025Calculated from Bank of America Form 10-K FY2025
Small against the base.

The comparison inside Bank of America is instructive. Consumer investment assets, largely Merrill Edge in the consumer bank, rose from $599.1 billion at the end of 2025 to $639.5 billion in June 20263. The consumer side of investing is where new, smaller clients arrive.

A slow organic rate is normal for a mature wealth manager; it is not a failure. It does mean the franchise's value rests on keeping existing clients, which it does well, rather than on winning many new ones.

The consumer side is where smaller savers start. Consumer investment assets grew about 6.7% in the first half of 202645, faster than the wealth segment's organic flows, which is consistent with new investors arriving through Merrill Edge before they reach an adviser.

The flow rate is the thing to watch over several years. A rate that settled below 1% would say Merrill was a melting ice cube held up by markets.
