⚠ Six Basis Points Is Not a Moat on Its OwnModerate threat
Bank of America (BAC) — threat to the moat
Bank of America's funding lead over JPMorgan has shrunk from about a third of a point in 2023 to six basis points in 2025.
The advantage over JPMorgan is real and small. Six basis points on about $1.98 trillion of deposits is roughly $1.2 billion a year before tax1, against Bank of America's 2025 net income of $30,509 million2. It would take very little to erase it.
The two banks' deposit costs have also moved in different directions in different years. JPMorgan's deposit cost was 2.08% in 2024 and 1.70% in 20233; Bank of America's was about 2.00% and 1.39%4. In 2023 Bank of America was well ahead, in 2024 slightly ahead, in 2025 by six basis points. The lead is shrinking.
A narrowing edge on funding matters because funding is where Bank of America's moat is strongest. Its other gaps against JPMorgan, in cost and in fee businesses, are wider.
The cost of deposits can also move for reasons that have nothing to do with competition. JPMorgan's rose from 1.70% in 2023 to 2.08% in 2024 and fell to 1.80% in 20255, tracking the rate cycle. Both banks' costs move with the Federal Reserve; the lead is the difference between them.
The deposit cost gap is published once a year in both banks' annual reports. If Bank of America's cost of deposits rose above JPMorgan's in 2026, the one area in which it clearly leads would be gone.
