Bank of America (BAC) — threat to the moat
Bank of America's deposits cost almost nothing in 2021 and two percent in 2024; the moat protects the spread, not the price.
A deposit franchise is cheap relative to market rates, not in absolute terms. Bank of America's cost of total deposits was about 0.03% in 2021 and about 2.00% in 20241. Interest on interest-bearing deposits went from $537 million in 2021 to $38,442 million in 202423.
That is not a failure of the franchise; every bank's funding cost rose. It is a reminder that the deposit moat protects the spread, not the level, and that a bank whose assets were locked in at low yields, as Bank of America's securities book was, feels the rise on the liability side before the asset side catches up.
The bank's net interest income tells the story. It was $56,931 million in 2023 and $56,060 million in 2024 before recovering to $60,096 million in 202545, as assets repriced upward and deposit costs eased.
Interest-bearing deposits show the move most starkly. Their average cost was 0.05% in 2021, 2.72% in 2024 and 2.35% in 202567. A 2.3-point swing on more than $1.4 trillion of balances is the rate cycle's bill, and it was paid by every bank that held deposits.
Interest on deposits is the item to follow. It fell to $34,513 million in 20258; a return toward the 2024 level without a matching rise in asset yields would squeeze the income the franchise exists to produce.
