Running Off $152 BillionThin moat
Bank of America (BAC) — moat facet
Bank of America built a $236 billion bond position in one pandemic year and is unwinding it at about $35 billion a year.
Bank of America's answer to its securities problem has been to let the book run off. Held-to-maturity amortised cost peaked at $674,591 million at the end of 20211 and was $522,685 million at the end of 20252, a reduction of about $152 billion3. By June 2026 it was $505,828 million4.
The bank bought nothing new for the book in 2024 or 20255. Paydowns and maturities were $34,794 million in 20256. Each dollar returned can be reinvested at current yields, which are far higher than those locked in during 2020 and 2021.
The book was built quickly. Amortised cost was $438,279 million at the end of 2020 and $674,591 million a year later78, an increase of about $236 billion in a single year9, as deposits flooded in during the pandemic. It is being unwound slowly.
At the 2025 pace the remaining book would take more than a decade to run off10, and mortgage securities tend to repay more slowly when rates are high, because fewer borrowers refinance. The drag on income is therefore long.
Runoff shrinks the balance sheet's worst assets while total assets still grow. Total assets rose from $3,180,151 million at the end of 2023 to $3,411,738 million at the end of 20251112, so the proceeds of the old bonds are being put into loans and new securities at today's yields.
The pace of runoff is visible in the quarterly balance. If the book fell faster than about $35 billion a year the income benefit would arrive sooner; if it slowed, the low-yielding assets would stay on the balance sheet into the 2030s.
Book down from $674.6bn (2021) to $505.8bn (June 2026).
The low-yielding assets still to reprice; a slower runoff means the drag lasts longer.
