Eighty-Two Billion Dollars of Net FlowsNarrow moat

Bank of America (BAC) — moat facet

Merrill adds about $82 billion of new money a year, under 2% of what it already holds.

The clearest measure of a wealth franchise is how much new money clients bring. Global Wealth & Investment Management's assets under management received net client flows of $81,997 million in 2025 and $79,227 million in 20241. That is new money placed under advice, after withdrawals.

Steady, not fast.

Against a starting base of $4.25 trillion of client balances, $82 billion is about 1.9% a year2. That is modest. It says the franchise is adding clients and assets, but not quickly.

The profitability of the business is steady. The segment's net income was $3,947 million in 2023, $4,263 million in 2024 and $4,670 million in 20253, and in the second quarter of 2026 it earned a pretax margin of 27% and a 26% return on allocated capital4.

Merrill serves clients with over $250,000 in total investable assets5, so each new relationship is substantial. The bank's advantage is the flow of customers from its consumer bank who reach that threshold.

The flows arrive with the segment's highest-value clients. Merrill's clients have over $250,000 in investable assets6, and the Private Bank serves wealthier clients still; each dollar of new money in this segment brings more fee revenue than a dollar deposited in a checking account.

Net flows are the figure that separates skill from market luck. A year in which they fell below half of 2025's while markets rose would mean the franchise was losing clients to rivals.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Net AUM flows $79.2bn (2024) and $82.0bn (2025).
