Bank of America (BAC) — threat to the moat

Most of Merrill's revenue is a percentage of what markets are worth, so a bear market cuts it without a single client leaving.

Much of Bank of America's wealth revenue is a percentage of client assets. Investment and brokerage services income was $19,956 million in 2025 and $17,766 million in 20241, an increase of about 12.3%2 in a year of rising markets.

Up 12% with the market.

The same arithmetic runs backwards. When asset prices fall, fees fall with them, with no action by clients or competitors required.

Wealth revenue is sometimes described as recurring. It recurs, but at a level set by markets, which is why the segment's revenue barely moved from 2015 to 2019, $18,034 million to $19,538 million as reported at the time34.

Assets under management show the same dependence. Net client flows added $81,997 million in 20255, while assets under management ended the year at $2,177,708 million6. The flows are under 4% of the total7; most of the rest of the year's change came from markets.

Investment and brokerage income is the line to follow in the next market decline. A fall much larger than the market's would mean clients were leaving as well.
