Global MarketsThin moat
Bank of America (BAC) — moat facet
Global Markets grew revenue 23% in two years and earns a 20% return, from the most cyclical business Bank of America owns.
Global Markets is Bank of America's trading business and its fastest grower. Revenue was $19,533 million in 2023 and $24,096 million in 2025, an increase of about 23.4%12; net income rose from $4,682 million to $6,111 million3.
The segment provides sales and trading services and research to institutional clients across fixed income, credit, currency, commodity and equity businesses4, and it makes markets, finances positions, clears and holds custody. Its main broker-dealers are BofA Securities, Inc. and Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith5.
It is paid in trading revenue and fees rather than spread. Noninterest income was $18,406 million of 2025 revenue and net interest income $5,690 million6. Sales and trading revenue was $7,098 million in the second quarter of 2026, $3,476 million from fixed income and $3,622 million from equities7.
The history shows the market's swings. Revenue was $15,013 million in 2015 and $15,614 million in 2019, then $18,765 million in 2020, as reported then8910. The bank reported record sales and trading and record equities revenue in 202511.
It is profitable, at about 25.4% of revenue in 202512, and returned 20% on its allocated capital in the second quarter of 202613. It uses the most balance sheet relative to revenue of any segment: year-end assets of $1,032,858 million in 202514, revenue of about 2.3 cents per dollar of assets against Consumer Banking's 4.215.
The outlook is for share gains, from 7.6% of the industry pool toward 9%16, with international revenue up 38% in the latest quarter17.
Risk has fallen while revenue rose. Average daily value-at-risk was $49 million in the second quarter of 2026 against $84 million a year earlier18. Fixed income, currencies and commodities revenue rose 9% to $3.5 billion in that quarter19, far slower than equities.
On the evidence, Global Markets is a thin moat in a cyclical business that is currently winning. Watch the sales and trading streak: a year-over-year decline after 17 quarters of growth, in a normal market, would show the gains were the market's rather than the bank's.
Revenue $19.5bn (2023) to $24.1bn (2025); 17 straight quarters of trading growth.
The trading business's size; a decline in a normal market would show the growth was cyclical.
