✦ Global Markets AbroadThin moat
Bank of America (BAC) — the future bets
Bank of America is growing its markets business abroad, where it has none of the deposit advantages it enjoys at home.
One of the investor-day themes was growth outside the United States, and the markets business is where it shows first. Global Markets international revenue increased 38% in the second quarter of 20261, and the chief financial officer said on the call that the result was consistent with the bank's investor-day messaging of continuing its improved performance internationally2.
The bank operates in more than 35 countries and jurisdictions3, and its markets business runs through broker-dealers including Merrill Lynch International and BofA Securities Europe SA4. Global Markets revenue was $8,022 million and net income $2,626 million in the second quarter of 20265.
International growth broadens the markets business away from the American cycle, but it does not broaden the deposit moat. The bank's financial centers are all in 38 states and the District of Columbia6, so abroad it competes without its consumer franchise.
That makes the international push a bet on the most cyclical revenue the bank has, in markets where it has no home advantage. Average value-at-risk was $49 million in the second quarter of 2026 against $84 million a year earlier7, so the growth came without more trading risk.
The international push extends a business that is already large. Global Markets revenue was $24,096 million in 20258, and the first half of 2026 brought $15,131 million91011, on pace for a record year.
The international revenue growth rate is the measure. Continued double-digit growth through a quieter market year would show real client wins; a reversal would say 2026 was a good year rather than a new franchise.
International markets revenue +38% in Q2 2026.
Profit from the markets push including abroad; a fall in a quieter year would show how cyclical the growth is.
