⚠ Growth Without MarginLow threat
Bank of America (BAC) — threat to the moat
Bank of America's wealth business grew revenue 18% in two years and kept exactly the same share of it as profit.
Global Wealth & Investment Management's revenue rose from $21,105 million in 2023 to $24,883 million in 2025, and its net income from $3,947 million to $4,670 million1. The margin barely changed, from about 18.7% to 18.8%2.
That means growth is not bringing scale. A business with fixed costs should keep a rising share of each extra dollar; this one keeps the same share, because most of its cost is adviser compensation that grows with revenue.
For Bank of America's return on equity that matters. Closing the gap with JPMorgan needs businesses whose margins rise with size, and wealth management, as run today, is not one of them.
The segment's cost base is mostly people, and people cost more each year. Across the whole bank, compensation and benefits were $42,346 million in 20253, and the bank's headcount was about 213,0004. Wealth management is the business in which pay tracks revenue most directly.
The segment's margin is the figure to track. A net income margin above 20% for a full year would be the first evidence of scale; a fall below 18% would mean the costs of growth were rising faster than revenue.
