Consumer BankingWide moat

Bank of America (BAC) — moat facet

Consumer Banking earns 40% of Bank of America's profit and a 29% return on its capital, almost all of it from the spread on household deposits.

Consumer Banking is Bank of America's largest and most profitable business, and the one where its moat lives. It produced revenue of $43,673 million and net income of $12,245 million in 20251, about 38.4% of the four segments' revenue and 40.1% of company net income2. It returned 29% on its allocated capital in the second quarter of 2026, the highest of the four segments3.

Consumer Banking revenue, as reported ($M)31,519201537,618201833,262202042,031202343,6732025Bank of America Forms 10-K, each year as reported; 2023-2025 restated basis
Up and down with rates, and at a high.

The segment holds household and small business accounts: savings, money market accounts, CDs and IRAs, checking accounts and investment accounts, credit and debit cards, residential mortgages, home equity and auto loans4. It includes Merrill Edge consumer investments5.

It makes money mainly on the spread. Net interest income was $35,309 million of the segment's 2025 revenue, about 81%67. The deposit spread was 2.92% in 2025 against 2.77% in 20248. Noninterest income, $8,364 million, comes mainly from card fees and service charges9.

The history follows the rate cycle. Revenue was $31,519 million in 2015 and $37,618 million in 2018 as rates rose, fell to $33,262 million in 2020 when they were cut, and reached $43,673 million in 202510111213, each year as reported at the time. Net income fell to $6,504 million in 2020, the year the bank's provision for credit losses reached $11,320 million14.

Credit is the main cost. The segment's provision for credit losses was $4,649 million in 202515, about 82% of the bank's total16, because consumer cards carry high loss rates: the card charge-off rate was 3.68% in 202517.

The outlook is steady growth on a large base. Revenue grew about 3.9% from 2023 to 2025 on the restated basis18, and the segment earned $22,385 million of revenue in the first half of 2026192021.

The payments running through the segment show how much of customers' lives it carries. Debit card purchase volume was $594.6 billion and credit card purchase volume $377.8 billion in 202522. The consumer charge-off ratio was 1.48% in 202523, the cost of lending to households the bank already knows through their checking accounts.

The segment's first-half 2026 results were strong across the board. Net income was $6,341 million for the half242526, and the segment added more than 160,000 net new consumer checking accounts in the second quarter alone27.

This line is the wide moat. What would change that is the segment's return on allocated capital: below 25% for a full year without a rise in credit losses would mean the deposits were losing their value.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Revenue $42.0bn (2023) to $43.7bn (2025); ROAC 29% in Q2 2026.

The size of the wide-moat business; a fall while rates were stable would mean the deposit spread was compressing.
