U.S.Narrow moat
Philip Morris International (PM) — moat facet
PMI's U.S. line is almost all ZYN, and the pouch's 2026 stall turned the company's fastest grower into its only shrinking segment.
The U.S. segment is PMI's smallest and most volatile line. It earned net revenues of $3,216 million in 2025, 7.9% of the company12, and $856 million in the second quarter of 2026, down 0.7%3. In the first half of 2026 its revenue fell 16.1% to $1,478 million4.
What is inside is ZYN nicotine pouches, General snus, moist snuff and cigars from Swedish Match, IQOS in a limited launch in Austin, and the wellness unit Aspeya5. Smoke-free products, including wellness, were $2,858 million of 2025 revenue and cigars $358 million6. PMI sells no cigarettes in the United States and says it has no plans to7.
The history is short. PMI had almost no American business until it bought a controlling stake in Swedish Match on 11 November 20228, for a total of about $16,838 million including later minority purchases9. It then paid $2.8 billion for the American IQOS rights, taking control on 1 May 202410. Recast revenue was $2,169 million in 2023, $2,944 million in 2024 and $3,216 million in 20251112, growth of 35.7% and then 9.2%13.
How it is paid: pouches and cigars are sold through distributors and convenience stores, taxed at the state and federal level. The line depends on FDA authorisations; ZYN holds the only modified risk orders for a nicotine pouch, granted on 30 June 202614.
Profitability depends on the basis. Segment gross profit was $1,305 million, $2,050 million and $2,206 million from 2023 to 20251516, an adjusted gross margin of 69.2% in 202517. Adjusted operating companies income was $1,124 million in 2025, a 35.0% margin; on the reported basis, after amortisation and special items, it was $322 million18.
Growth reversed in 2026. ZYN shipments fell 11.2% in the first half on distributor destocking and competition19, the segment's adjusted gross margin fell 6.0 points to 65.4% in the second quarter after ZYN moved to more pouches per can20, and first-half adjusted operating income fell 50.2% organically21. Cigars fell 12.7% in 2025 and wellness revenue shrank22.
The segment's earliest figures show how quickly ZYN changed it. In the old six-segment view Swedish Match earned revenue of $316 million and an operating loss of $22 million in 2022, the weeks after the purchase, and $2,496 million of revenue with $824 million of operating income in 202323, its first full year inside PMI.
The outlook depends on two things: ZYN returning to growth, and the FDA's decision on IQOS ILUMA24. The verdict would change for the better if the segment returned to double-digit growth in 2027 with IQOS contributing, and for the worse if gross profit kept falling after the destocking has ended.
H1 2026 revenue -16.1%; Q2 gross profit -9.2%.
Whether the American business earns through the pouch price cuts; continued falls after destocking would confirm lost pricing power.
