Philip Morris International (PM) — threat to the moat

PMI paid out more than it reported in earnings in 2023 and 2024, because of write-downs, and in 2023 slightly more than its free cash flow.

The dividend has not always been covered by reported earnings. PMI declared $5.14 a share in 2023 against diluted earnings of $5.02, and $5.30 in 2024 against $4.521: payouts of about 102% and 117%2. Only in 2025, with earnings of $7.26, did the ratio fall back to about 78%3.

Covered again in 2025.

The shortfalls came from charges rather than a weaker business. The 2024 figure was cut by the $2,316 million impairment of the Canadian subsidiary RBH4, and 2023 by the wellness goodwill write-down5. On adjusted earnings of $7.54 in 2025, the payout was about 75%67.

Cash coverage is the stricter test, and it too was thin in 2023. Dividends paid were $7,964 million that year against free cash flow of about $7,883 million8, as working capital and the Swedish Match integration absorbed cash.

The risk is a year in which a charge and a cash shortfall coincide. The number that would reveal it is the ratio of dividends to free cash flow; above 100% in a year without an obvious one-off, the dividend would be growing on borrowed money.
