SubscriptionWide moat
CrowdStrike (CRWD) — moat facet
Subscription is 95% of CrowdStrike's revenue, earns a 78% gross margin and grew 27% in the latest quarter.
Subscription is almost all of CrowdStrike: $4,564.7 million in fiscal 2026, 95% of revenue1. It grew about 21.4% in the year2 and 27% in the second quarter of fiscal 2027, to $1,400.3 million34.
What is inside the line is simple. "Subscription revenue primarily consists of subscription fees for our Falcon platform and additional cloud modules"5. It is driven, the company says, by the number of subscription customers, the number of endpoints per customer and the number of cloud modules in each subscription6. Falcon Complete, the managed detection and response service in which CrowdStrike's own staff watch a customer's systems, is sold as a subscription too7.
The unit priced is the protected endpoint and the module. Customers are generally invoiced at the start of the term, which usually runs one to three years, and revenue is recognised evenly over it8. That is why so much of each period's revenue comes from contracts signed earlier, and why the line moves slowly even when new business jumps.
It is profitable on a gross basis. GAAP subscription gross margin was 78% in fiscal 2026 and 81% on the company's non-GAAP basis9; subscription gross profit was about $3,548.8 million10. Cost of subscription revenue rose 22% in fiscal 2026, driven by $46.4 million more cloud hosting and $33.4 million more depreciation of data centre equipment, among other items11. CrowdStrike does not report operating profit by revenue line, so everything below gross profit is shared with the company.
The history is one of fast deceleration from a very high rate. Subscription revenue grew about 137.0% in fiscal 2019, 84.4% in fiscal 2021, 55.3% in fiscal 2023, 31.0% in fiscal 2025 and 21.4% in fiscal 202612, compounding at about 62.8% a year from $92.6 million in fiscal 201813. The dollars added each year tell the outage story: $890.9 million in fiscal 2025 but $803.2 million in fiscal 20261415, the lag of the weaker net new ARR in the year after July 2024.
The outlook has turned up. Growth re-accelerated to 26% in the first half of fiscal 202716, and the fiscal 2027 revenue guidance of about $6.0 billion17 implies about 25% for the company18.
The quarterly figures show the re-acceleration. Subscription revenue was $1,242.3 million in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, against $1,008.3 million a year earlier19, and $1,400.3 million in the second quarter of fiscal 202720.
People are part of the cost as well as machines. Employee-related expenses in subscription cost of revenue rose $43.1 million in fiscal 2026, on a 16% increase in average headcount21, partly because managed services such as Falcon Complete are delivered by CrowdStrike's own security experts.
Subscription growth should track ARR growth with a lag. It was 27% in the latest quarter against ARR growth of 25%; if subscription growth drops below ARR growth for several quarters, the ARR being reported is not turning into recognised revenue at the usual pace.
Subscription growth 21.4% (FY2026) to 27% (Q2 FY2027).
The recurring line; falling below ARR growth for several quarters would mean reported ARR is not becoming revenue.
