Professional ServicesNarrow moat

CrowdStrike (CRWD) — moat facet

Professional services is 5% of CrowdStrike's revenue at a thin margin, and its value lies in installing the sensor after a breach.

Professional services is CrowdStrike's small second line: $247.3 million in fiscal 2026, 5% of revenue1. It earns little. Cost of services was $203.0 million2, leaving a GAAP gross margin of about 17.9%3, and in the second quarter of fiscal 2027 the GAAP gross margin was 10%, against 15% a year earlier, and 30% on a non-GAAP basis4.

Flat in the outage year, then up again.

What is inside the line is breach work. "Professional services revenue includes incident response and proactive services, forensic and malware analysis, attribution analysis, operationalizing the Falcon Platform, residency program, and active defense services"5. The services are generally sold separately from subscriptions6, mostly on time-and-material terms, so revenue follows the hours worked7.

Its value is not the margin but the door it opens. Its incident response services "typically begin by deploying our lightweight sensor" to the customer's machines8, and the company says it views the services business "primarily as an opportunity to cross-sell subscriptions"9. A company that calls CrowdStrike after a breach finishes the job with the Falcon sensor installed, which is the start of a subscription. The same teams feed the company's models: CrowdStrike says its incident response work helps curate the data used to train its AI10.

The history is steady growth with one flat year. Services revenue rose from $26.2 million in fiscal 201811 to $247.3 million in fiscal 2026, about 32.4% a year12. It grew about 42.8% in fiscal 2024, only about 4% in fiscal 2025 and about 29% in fiscal 2026131415, each time "attributable to an increase in the number of professional service hours"16. The flat year was the outage year, when the customer commitment packages included professional services17 and the company guided to a high-single-digit million services impact18.

The margin has been under pressure. Cost of services rose 30% in fiscal 2026, including $18.7 million more consulting expense and $15.5 million more employee costs on a 12% rise in average headcount19. The line competes with the "professional service providers who offer cybersecurity response services" that the 10-K lists among rivals20.

The margin squeeze began in the outage year. In fiscal 2025 the cost of services rose 25% while revenue rose about 4%, with employee costs up on a 20% increase in average headcount21.

In the latest quarter services revenue grew 7%22, below the company's 26%. The gross margin is the figure to watch here: at 10% on GAAP in the quarter, a further fall toward zero would mean CrowdStrike is running its breach work as a loss leader, acceptable only while the subscriptions it opens keep growing faster.
