The Data Behind the ConsoleNarrow moat
CrowdStrike (CRWD) — moat facet
CrowdStrike's move into security data and AI is lifting its capital spending to 8% of revenue from 3%.
The sensor collects data; the value lies in what CrowdStrike does with it once it arrives in the cloud. That is where the company is now spending noticeably more of its money. Purchases of property and equipment were 8% of revenue in the quarter to 31 July 2026, against 3% a year earlier1. In the quarter they were $124.4 million2.
The full-year figures show the same direction over a longer period. Capital expenditure on property and equipment was $176.5 million in fiscal 20243, $254.9 million in fiscal 2025 and $302.1 million in fiscal 20264, an increase of about 71% in two years5, while revenue rose about 57%6. Capitalised software added another $68.8 million in fiscal 20267.
The acquisitions point the same way. In September 2025 CrowdStrike bought Onum Technology for $252.7 million and Pangea Cyber for $212.1 million8, businesses that deal with moving and processing security data and securing AI applications. The company was named a Leader in the 2026 IDC MarketScape for SIEM vendors9, a market for storing and searching security logs that sits well beyond the original endpoint product.
A moat that rests on data is a moat that has to be paid for. Every customer's telemetry must be stored, indexed and analysed, and the release does not say how the higher capital spending divides between data centres, AI computing and anything else. What can be said is that CrowdStrike is building more of its own infrastructure as it moves into logs and AI.
The commitments run well beyond one year. Non-cancelable purchase obligations, which the 10-Q says include data centre capacity, totalled $4,141.5 million at 31 July 202610, of which $843.1 million falls due in fiscal 202811. The data business is being built on multi-year contracts for capacity as well as on capital spending.
The ratio to follow is capital spending as a share of revenue. At 8% it is still modest; a sustained rise into double digits without a matching lift in subscription gross margin would mean the data business is more capital-hungry than the endpoint business it grew out of.
Capex 8% of Q2 FY2027 revenue, from 3%.
The price of storing and analysing what the sensor sees; double digits without a gross-margin gain would mean the data business is capital-hungry.
