⚠ Capital Spending Rising Faster Than RevenueLow threat
CrowdStrike (CRWD) — threat to the moat
CrowdStrike's capital spending has started growing faster than its revenue as it builds data and AI capacity.
For most of its public life CrowdStrike needed little capital. That is changing. Purchases of property and equipment were 8% of revenue in the latest quarter, from 3% a year earlier1, while revenue grew 26%2.
Over two full years capital spending grew about 71% against revenue growth of about 57%3. Free cash flow still rose, to $1,235.3 million in fiscal 20264, but a business whose investment grows faster than its sales will see its cash margin squeezed unless the new spending earns its keep.
The company does not explain the increase line by line in the release, and its guidance is for operating income and earnings, not capital spending5.
The first half of fiscal 2027 shows the step-up plainly. Purchases of property and equipment were $222.0 million in the six months to July 2026, against $116.2 million a year earlier6, nearly double, while revenue grew about 26%.
The test is the free cash flow margin, 26% in the latest quarter7. If capital spending stays near 8% of revenue and the free cash flow margin falls below the fiscal 2026 level of about 25.7%8, the data build is taking cash the old model used to return.
