Free Cash Flow Without GAAP ProfitNarrow moat
CrowdStrike (CRWD) — moat facet
CrowdStrike turns a GAAP operating loss into more than $1.2 billion of free cash flow because customers pay first and employees are paid in stock.
CrowdStrike reports two very different pictures of the same year. On a GAAP basis it lost $293.3 million from operations in fiscal 20261, a margin of about minus 6.1%2. On a cash basis it generated $1,612.3 million from operations and $1,235.3 million of free cash flow3, a free cash flow margin of about 25.7%4.
Two things bridge the gap. Customers pay in advance, so cash arrives before revenue is recognised; deferred revenue was $4.75 billion at January 20265. And the biggest non-cash expense, stock-based compensation, is not paid in cash; it was $1,096.7 million in fiscal 20266.
Prepayment is a genuine moat feature. Customers who pay a year ahead are customers who have decided to stay a year. Stock pay is a different matter: it is a real cost to shareholders, paid in dilution rather than dollars, and the root threat on stock pay covers it. Free cash flow after stock pay was about $138.6 million in fiscal 20267.
The latest quarter keeps the pattern. Free cash flow was $377.4 million, a 26% margin8, and first-half free cash flow was $845.9 million, 30% of revenue9, helped by a record first quarter of $468.5 million10.
The record quarters keep arriving. Operating cash flow was $590.9 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, a record, against $384.1 million a year earlier11; the first quarter is when the annual bills sent in January are paid.
The cash is real and the prepayment behind it is a sign of loyal customers. The free cash flow margin, 26% in the latest quarter, is the gauge; a drop below 20% would mean either customers are no longer prepaying on the old terms or costs are catching up with the cash.
FCF margin 25.7% (FY2026); 26% in Q2 FY2027.
Prepayment turned into cash; below 20% would mean prepayment terms or costs have changed.
