Five Billion Dollars of CashNarrow moat

CrowdStrike (CRWD) — moat facet

CrowdStrike holds about $4.5 billion of net cash, which pays interest into the income statement and funds its acquisitions.

CrowdStrike has more cash than it knows what to do with, and it shows up in the accounts. Cash and cash equivalents were $5,230.1 million at January 20261 against $745.5 million of long-term debt2, the $750 million of 3.00% senior notes due February 20293. That is net cash of about $4.5 billion4. At 31 July 2026 cash was $5.01 billion5.

Fiscal 2026 income statement below operations ($M)-293.3Operating loss+195.0Interest income-127.0Pre-tax lossCrowdStrike Q4 FY2026 results release; losses shown by magnitude
Interest on the cash covered two-thirds of the operating loss.

The cash earns money. Interest income was $195.0 million in fiscal 20266, which is why the company's pre-tax loss, $127.0 million7, was far smaller than its $293.3 million operating loss. The balance sheet itself is doing part of the work the business does not yet do on a GAAP basis.

It also pays for the platform. CrowdStrike spent $881.4 million net on acquisitions in the first half of fiscal 20278, mainly SGNL for $627.9 million and the rest of Seraphic for $327.5 million9, without borrowing. It began buying back shares in June 2025 and has since raised the programme to $1.5 billion10.

For the moat, a cash pile is protection rather than advantage. It lets CrowdStrike absorb shocks like the July 2024 outage, which cost about $181 million net through July 202611, and buy capabilities rather than wait to build them. It does not stop a customer leaving.

The balance moves with the billing season and the deals. Cash was $5.23 billion at 31 January 202612, $4.55 billion at 30 April after the SGNL and Seraphic payments13 and $5.01 billion at 31 July14.

The figure to watch is cash against acquisitions. Cash of $5.01 billion at July 2026 is ample; if it falls below $4 billion without a matching rise in free cash flow, the company will be buying its platform faster than its customers fund it.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Cash $5.23bn (Jan 2026) to $5.01bn (Jul 2026) after $881M of acquisitions.

Reported
Cash and cash equivalents, latest quarter
$5.01bn (Jul 2026)

The cushion that funds deals and absorbs shocks; below $4bn without higher free cash flow would mean acquisitions are outrunning the customers who fund them.
