The Startups It Buys Before They GrowNarrow moat

CrowdStrike (CRWD) — moat facet

CrowdStrike turns small rivals into modules before they grow, paying about $1.7 billion in cash for six of them since 2024.

CrowdStrike's cheapest way to beat a young competitor is to buy it while it is small. Since March 2024 it has bought Flow Security for $96.4 million and Adaptive Shield for $213.7 million1, Onum Technology for $252.7 million and Pangea Cyber for $212.1 million2, the rest of Seraphic for $327.5 million and SGNL for $627.9 million3. The cash paid comes to about $1,730 million4. In July 2026 it agreed to buy the technology assets of XM Cyber for $145.0 million in cash and shares5.

Many small deals, none large.

Each deal filled a gap a specialist was exploiting: data security, SaaS security, security data pipelines, AI application security, browser security, identity and exposure management. Seraphic shows the method most clearly. CrowdStrike already held part of it through its venture arm, and bought the rest of the equity in February 20266.

The accounts show the pace picking up. Goodwill was $912.8 million at January 2025, $1,363.3 million a year later7 and $2,251.4 million at 31 July 20268. Business acquisitions took $881.4 million of cash in the first half of fiscal 20279, against net new ARR of about $588.6 million in the same six months10.

The strategy suits a single-agent platform. A bought product rides the same sensor and the same console, so it reaches the installed base at once instead of fighting for each customer. The deals are also small next to the $21,061 million Palo Alto booked for CyberArk11, which keeps CrowdStrike's balance sheet free of large goodwill write-down risk.

The earlier deals were smaller still. Preempt Security, bought in fiscal 2021, brought $6.8 million of ARR12, and Humio and SecureCircle together brought $4.5 million in fiscal 202213. The recent purchases are larger, but the pattern of buying early has not changed.

The risk is that small purchases add products faster than customers adopt them. The module adoption pages of The Moat track that. Here the figure is goodwill, $2,251.4 million at July 2026; if it keeps climbing faster than net new ARR, CrowdStrike is buying breadth that customers are not yet paying for.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Goodwill $912.8M (Jan 2025) to $2,251.4M (Jul 2026).

The number that tests this moat
Reported
Goodwill, latest quarter
$2,251.4M (Jul 2026), from $912.8M (Jan 2025)

What the bought modules cost; rising faster than net new ARR would mean breadth is outrunning adoption.
