A $10.7 Billion Backlog With No NamesNarrow moat
CrowdStrike (CRWD) — moat facet
CrowdStrike discloses that no customer is large, but not who stands behind a $10.7 billion contract book, more than half of it not yet billed.
Revenue and backlog tell different stories about concentration, and only one of them is disclosed. Revenue has no customer at 10%1. The contract book, $10.7 billion of remaining performance obligations at 31 July 20262, is not broken down by customer at all.
The composition of that book has shifted toward the unbilled. CrowdStrike invoices at the start of a term, "or in some instances, such as in multi-year arrangements, in installments"3. Contracted amounts not yet invoiced are called backlog: about $2.8 billion at January 20254, $4.2 billion at January 20265 and $5.9 billion at July 20266, up about 111% in eighteen months7. More than half the contract book has therefore not yet been billed.
Who sits behind that growth is not disclosed, but the pattern points at the largest customers. Multi-year instalment deals and Falcon Flex commitments are enterprise contracts; accounts that adopted Flex carried more than $2.29 billion of ARR at July 20268, about 39% of the total9. One small clue exists in the financing receivables, where two end users made up 78% at January 2025 and 27% a year later10.
This is the gap an investor should keep in mind. A diversified revenue line can sit on top of a contract book concentrated in a few hundred large enterprises, and the filings would not show it. The contracts are mostly non-cancelable11, which protects the revenue, but a large customer that renegotiates at renewal affects the backlog more than the income statement.
The two halves of the contract book reconcile. Deferred revenue already billed was $4,842.2 million at 31 July 202612, and the unbilled backlog about $5.9 billion13; together they make up almost all of the $10.7 billion of obligations.
The unbilled backlog is the number to watch. At $5.9 billion it is larger than deferred revenue; if it keeps rising faster than revenue, a growing share of CrowdStrike's future depends on large customers paying instalments they have signed for but not yet been asked to pay.
Unbilled backlog $2.8bn (Jan 2025) to $5.9bn (Jul 2026).
Contracted but not yet invoiced; rising faster than revenue means more of the future rests on large customers paying instalments.
