Seventy-Eight Minutes, 8.5 Million DevicesWide moat
CrowdStrike (CRWD) — moat facet
CrowdStrike disabled 8.5 million Windows machines for its customers and kept about 97% of its revenue, a hard test of switching costs passed.
On 19 July 2024 CrowdStrike released a configuration update for its Falcon sensor that caused outages for customers running certain Windows systems. The update went out at 04:09 UTC and was reverted at 05:27 UTC1, about 78 minutes2. The company stressed that "The event was not caused by a cyberattack"3. Microsoft estimated 8.5 million Windows devices were affected, "less than one percent of all Windows machines"4.
For a moat analysis the incident is a natural experiment. It is hard to imagine a worse failure for a security vendor than disabling the machines it was hired to protect. If customers were ever going to leave, it would be then.
Most did not. Gross retention was reported above 97% in November 20245 and at 97% at January 20256. Revenue grew about 29% in fiscal 20257. What fell was new business: net new ARR declined from $875.5 million in fiscal 2024 to $806.7 million in fiscal 202589, and net retention dropped to 112%10.
The recovery since is clear. Net new ARR was a record $1.01 billion in fiscal 202611, up about 25%12, and a record $332.8 million in the second quarter of fiscal 202713.
Microsoft's account explains why a small share of devices caused so much disruption: the broad effects reflected the use of CrowdStrike by enterprises that run many critical services14. The customers most dependent on the sensor were the ones most visibly hurt, and they are also the ones whose retention the next pages measure.
The lesson is that the switching cost held and the reputation took a dent that cost roughly a year of expansion. The full-year net new ARR figure is the measure of whether the dent has healed: the company guides growth of 34% in fiscal 202715, and a year below fiscal 2026's $1.01 billion would mean the damage was more lasting than the recovery suggests.
Net new ARR $806.7M (FY2025) to $1.01bn (FY2026); FY2027 guided +34%.
Whether the outage dent has healed; a year below $1.01bn would mean lasting damage.
