The Test of July 19Narrow moat

CrowdStrike (CRWD) — moat facet

July 2024 proved CrowdStrike's customers cannot easily leave, and also that keeping them cost a year of growth and a round of concessions.

Every moat claim is a prediction about what customers will do when something goes wrong. CrowdStrike's was tested on 19 July 2024, when a faulty sensor update caused outages on certain Windows systems1 that Microsoft estimated at 8.5 million devices2.

Customers stayed; new business paused.

The result is the strongest evidence in this file. Customers stayed: gross retention was reported above 97% four months later3 and at 97% at January 20254. Revenue grew about 29% in fiscal 20255. The securities class action was dismissed and closed in January 20266, and the passenger and derivative suits followed7.

What the incident did cost is also clear. Net new ARR fell from $875.5 million to $806.7 million in fiscal 202589. Net retention dropped to 112%10. CrowdStrike offered customer commitment packages of discounts, extra modules and longer terms11, and recorded net incident costs of $60.1 million in fiscal 2025 and $117.7 million in fiscal 202612. Delta's claim, reported at about $500 million13, is in discovery.

Why this confirms a moat: a vendor that disables its customers' computers and keeps about 97% of their revenue has switching costs that are operational, not sentimental. The sensor is too embedded to rip out in anger.

Why it is not wide on this facet: the company paid for loyalty with concessions whose cost arrives at renewal, and it says the incident "is expected to continue to harm" its business14. A second incident would test a customer base that has already been asked for forgiveness once.

Some of the remaining cost has moved to the insurers. Beyond the customer commitment packages, CrowdStrike says it has made an immaterial amount of settlement offers to certain customers, amounts that will be "entirely offset by recoveries" under its insurance policies15, with no effect on the income statement in the first half of fiscal 2027.

Cumulative net incident costs, about $181 million through July 202616, measure the direct bill. Keep an eye on it alongside net retention: rising costs with falling retention would mean the reckoning was postponed, not avoided.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Net incident costs turned to a recovery in Q2 FY2027; net retention 115%.
