⚠ A Crackdown Works OnceModerate threat
Netflix (NFLX) — threat to the moat
Paid sharing converted Netflix's borrowers once, and the growth it produced in 2023 and 2024 will not come again.
Paid sharing was a harvest, and harvests end. Netflix rolled it out to "almost all of the remaining countries" in July 20231, so there is no new pool of borrowers to convert. The record net additions of 20242 cannot be repeated by the same method.
What remains is ordinary growth: new households in markets Netflix has only partly penetrated, and higher prices. The company estimates it had penetrated less than 45% of its addressable market of broadband households at the end of 20253.
The danger is that 2024's numbers become the baseline in investors' minds. Revenue growth slowed from 17.6% in the fourth quarter of 2025 to 13.4% in the second quarter of 20264, partly as the paid-sharing lift faded.
The membership gains were spread across every region. Between the end of 2022 and 2024, memberships rose 20.6% in UCAN, 31.8% in EMEA, 27.9% in LATAM and 51.3% in APAC56. None of those rates is repeatable by the same method, because the borrowers in every region have now been asked to pay.
The sign to watch is growth without the lever. If revenue growth settles near 12% as the company guides for the third quarter7, the underlying business is still healthy; a fall below 10% would mean the harvest flattered more than expected.
