Content Amortization: From 44% to 36% of RevenueWide moat

Netflix (NFLX) — moat facet

Netflix spends more on content every year and still shrinks it as a share of revenue, because every show is spread over more than 325 million memberships.

This is the arithmetic of the whole company. Netflix amortized $16,422 million of content in 2025 against revenue of $45,183 million1, 36.3% of revenue, down from 44.4% in 20222. The bill still rose, from $14,026 million to $16,422 million34, but revenue rose 43% over the same three years5.

Ten points of revenue freed up in four years.

That gap is where the operating margin came from. A show costs the same whether one million members watch it or one hundred million, so every additional membership lowers the cost of content per member. Netflix has more than 325 million paid memberships, having "crossed the 325M paid memberships milestone" in the fourth quarter of 20256, and the same slate is offered to all of them.

The ratio keeps falling. In the second quarter of 2026 content amortization was $4,311 million on revenue of $12,560 million7, 34.3%8. Gross profit, revenue less cost of revenues, was 48.5% of revenue in 2025, against 41.5% in 20239.

The advantage is easy to state and hard to copy. A rival with a tenth of the audience pays almost the same for a comparable series and must spread it over a tenth of the members. That is how Netflix can raise its content spending every year and still keep a larger share of each dollar.

The ratio fell even through the 2023 strikes, when Netflix's cash spending on content dropped to about $13.1 billion10. Amortization lags spending, so the dip in cash in 2023 flattered later years less than it might appear: amortization still rose from $14,197 million in 2023 to $15,301 million in 202411. The ratio's decline reflects revenue growth rather than a one-year pause in production.

Netflix does not stop spending; its spending grows more slowly than its revenue. The falsifier is a year in which content amortization grows faster than revenue without a matching jump in viewing. The ratio stood at 34.3% in the latest quarter; a return above 40% would mean scale has stopped paying.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Amortization fell from 44.4% of revenue (2022) to 34.3% (Q2 2026).

The scale advantage in one ratio; a rise back above 40% without faster viewing growth would mean scale has stopped paying.

How it's calculated: Content amortization ($4,311.3M) divided by revenue ($12,559.9M) in Q2 2026, from the Q2 2026 10-Q.
