The MoatNarrow moat
Netflix (NFLX) — moat facet
Netflix's moat is arithmetic: a $16 billion content bill divided by more than 325 million memberships, though scale buys cost, not attention.
Netflix has a narrow moat built on one advantage: it can raise its content spending and still spend less per member, because it divides the bill among more than 325 million paid memberships1. Content amortization fell from 44.4% of revenue in 2022 to 36.3% in 20252, and the operating margin rose from 18% to 29.5%34.
Three other facets support it. Pricing power: revenue per American membership rose 8.4% in two years while memberships grew56. Ownership: produced content is 63% of content assets7. Cash: free cash flow of $9,461 million in 2025, nearly all returned in buybacks89.
Return on invested capital, computed from EDGAR, has risen from 6.5% in 2015 and 14.7% in 2022 to 32.6% in 202510, against an assumed 9% cost of capital. It has cleared that hurdle every year since 2017.
The moat is narrow rather than wide because scale buys cost, not attention. View hours grew about 2% in the first half of 202611, YouTube has a larger share of American television12, and more than half of Netflix's content amortization is still licensed from studios that compete with it13. Netflix also stopped reporting the membership numbers that proved its pricing power14.
The moat also shows in how the company grew through a difficult year. In 2022, the only year since 2015 in which net income fell, profit went from $5,116 million to $4,492 million15 and the operating margin was 18%16. Netflix responded with paid sharing and an ads tier rather than a price war, and by 2025 net income was $10,981 million17. A business without a moat usually answers a stall by cutting prices; this one answered by charging people who had been watching for free.
The verdict: a narrow moat that is still widening on cost and margin. The number that would falsify it is return on invested capital; if it falls back toward 15% while revenue grows, scale will have stopped paying.
ROIC 32.6% in 2025, up from 14.7% in 2022; margin still rising.
Whether scale still pays; a fall toward 15% while revenue grows would mean it has stopped.
