Where the Concentration Is: $25.1 Billion OwedNarrow moat

Netflix (NFLX) — moat facet

Netflix owes $25 billion to a small set of studios and rights holders, most of it off the balance sheet, while its revenue is spread across hundreds of millions of households.

Netflix's real concentration is on the other side of the ledger. At 30 June 2026 it had $25.1 billion of content obligations, of which $19.6 billion "are not reflected" on the balance sheet1. At the end of 2025 the figure was $24,039 million, with $11,528 million due within twelve months2, and it has risen from $21,713 million two years earlier3.

Rising every year.

These are commitments to a far smaller set of counterparties than the membership base: studios, producers and rights holders such as WWE, whose ten-year deal is valued at more than $5 billion4. Netflix also expects to owe between about $1 billion and $4 billion over three years for titles not yet known5.

The obligations exceed Netflix's debt. They are about 1.75 times its $14.3 billion of borrowings6, and about 78% sit off the balance sheet7, so a reader of the debt figure alone misses most of what the company owes.

This is the ordinary cost of a content business, not a hidden trap. But it means the fixed side of Netflix is concentrated while the revenue side is diffuse.

Next year's portion is large: $11,528 million of the obligations at the end of 2025 fell due within twelve months8, about a quarter of 2025 revenue9. Those payments are committed whatever happens to membership.

The obligations have grown faster than debt has. Content obligations rose from $21,713 million at the end of 2023 to $25.1 billion in June 20261011, while debt fell from $15,583 million at the end of 2024 to $14,309 million1213. Netflix is shifting its fixed claims from lenders to suppliers.

Look at the off-balance-sheet share. It rose from about 76% at the end of 2025 to about 78% in June 202614; a continued rise would mean more of Netflix's future spending is locked in before the viewers are.

Moat trajectory: Narrowing

Obligations $21.7bn (2023) to $25.1bn (June 2026).
