⚠ Hits Cannot Be ScheduledLow threat
Netflix (NFLX) — threat to the moat
Netflix can fund hundreds of titles a year, but it cannot schedule the rare hit that becomes a franchise.
Most of what Netflix makes will not be a KPop Demon Hunters. The company produces in more than 50 countries1 and releases hundreds of titles a year; only a few become lasting franchises.
The economics are forgiving because the subscription pays for the misses. But a strategy that increasingly leans on owned intellectual property, events and merchandise needs a pipeline of characters people want to follow, and that cannot be ordered.
The pipeline is large: $9,211 million of produced content was in production at the end of 20252. Size does not guarantee staying power.
The slate is broad enough to make hits likely somewhere. Netflix produces in more than 50 countries3, and its second-quarter letter listed new titles from the United Kingdom, Korea, Poland and Mexico4. A broad slate raises the chance of a hit without guaranteeing a franchise.
Only repetition proves a machine. If Netflix goes several years without another original lasting a year in its Global Top 10, the franchise ambitions will prove to rest on a single success.
