Negative Cash Flow Until 2020, $9.5 Billion Free Cash Flow in 2025Wide moat

Netflix (NFLX) — moat facet

Netflix burned cash for four years to build its library and now turns more than a fifth of revenue into free cash flow.

Netflix spent most of the last decade burning cash to build its library. Operating cash flow was negative every year from 2016 to 2019, reaching minus $2,887 million in 20191. It turned positive in 2020 at $2,427 million2 and reached $10,149 million in 20253.

From burning cash to generating it.

Free cash flow, operating cash flow less capital spending, was $9,461 million in 2025, against $6,922 million in 20244. That is 20.9% of revenue5, a remarkable figure for a business that must renew its content every few years.

The turn came when cash content spending stopped running far ahead of amortization. The ratio fell from 1.19 in 2022 to 1.08 in 20256, meaning the company now pays for its shows at close to the rate it expenses them.

This is the moat showing up in cash. A business without an edge could not fund a $17.7 billion content budget7 from its own customers.

Operating cash flow turned positive in 2020 at $2,427 million, dipped to $393 million in 2021, and was $2,026 million in 20228. The steady rise to $10,149 million in 20259 came as content spending stopped outrunning amortization.

For 2026 Netflix expects free cash flow of about $12.5 billion10, helped by the after-tax termination fee. A return to cash spending well above 1.1 times amortization, with free cash flow falling, would mean the company is back to buying growth.

Moat trajectory: Widening

FCF $9.5bn in 2025; about $12.5bn expected in 2026.

The number that tests this moat
Reported
Free cash flow, latest quarter
$1,525M (Q2 2026), against $2,267M a year earlier

The cash the moat produces; a sustained fall with cash content spend well above amortization would mean growth is being bought again.
