⚠ Buying Back at 44 Times EarningsModerate threat

Netflix (NFLX) — threat to the moat

Netflix spent $15 billion on its own shares at 36 to 44 times earnings before they fell by about two-fifths.

Buybacks are only as good as the price paid. Netflix's market value was $381.00 billion at the end of 2024 and $397.29 billion at the end of 20251, 43.7 and 36.2 times that year's earnings2. It spent $15.4 billion on repurchases across those two years34.

Heavy buying at high multiples.

The shares have since fallen about 41% in a year5, to $71.156. Much of what was bought in 2025 was bought well above today's price.

Netflix did buy more in the second quarter of 2026, after the fall7, which is the better timing.

In 2025 Netflix bought 86,536,215 shares for $9.1 billion8, an average of about $105 a share after adjusting for the split9, against $71.15 in late September 202610. Much of that capital is now worth about a third less than was paid.

Judge it by the average price paid against the current one. If buybacks keep growing only when the shares are expensive and slow when they are cheap, they will have transferred value from remaining holders to sellers.
