Produced Content: $20.6 Billion on the Balance SheetNarrow moat

Netflix (NFLX) — moat facet

Netflix owns $20.6 billion of produced content, which it controls in every country for as long as it likes.

Netflix has turned itself from a renter into an owner. At the end of 2025 its content assets were $32,778 million, of which $20,639.8 million was produced content and $12,139 million licensed1. Produced content is 63% of the total2.

Most of the balance sheet is Netflix-owned.

Owning a show changes its economics. Netflix controls where it appears, keeps it as long as it likes and can build sequels and live events around it. A licensed show can be withdrawn when the contract ends, and the owner can sell it to a rival.

The produced book breaks down into $10,687 million of released titles, $9,211 million in production and $742 million in development3. Almost half is work not yet on screen, which shows how far ahead the company commits.

The shift is recent and incomplete. In the income statement licensed content still costs more each year than produced content, as the separate page on that point explains.

The produced library kept growing into 2026: total content assets were $33,837.6 million at 30 June 20264, up from $32,778 million six months earlier5. The balance sheet is being filled with Netflix's own shows faster than the old ones are written off.

The measure of progress is the produced share of content assets. It is 63% today; a fall back below 60% would mean Netflix is again leaning on other studios' shows.
