Paid Sharing: 41 Million Net Additions in 2024Wide moat
Netflix (NFLX) — moat facet
Netflix told password borrowers to pay and added 41 million memberships in a year, the clearest proof of its pricing power.
The clearest demonstration of Netflix's pricing power was aimed at its own non-payers. In May 2023 it launched paid sharing in more than 100 countries representing over 80% of its revenue base1, charging households for accounts used outside them. Most expected cancellations. Instead paid net additions were 29.5 million in 2023 and 41.4 million in 20242, against 8.9 million in 20223.
The fourth quarter of 2024 brought 18.91 million net additions, "the biggest quarter of net adds in our history"4. Paid memberships ended 2024 at 301.6 million5.
Only a service people value highly can tell borrowers to pay and see them do it. The borrowers had already chosen Netflix; the company simply sent them the bill. Members can now add an extra member for $2 to $9 a month6.
This was a one-time lever, and Netflix has pulled it. Its value now lies in what it proved: demand held when access was restricted.
The rollout was fast. By May 2023 paid sharing covered more than 100 countries representing over 80% of revenue7, and it reached almost all the rest by July8. The speed shows how confident management was that borrowers would pay, and the results in 2023 and 2024 bore it out.
The evidence that would reverse the conclusion would be a return to net losses after a price rise, as in 2022, when UCAN memberships fell by 919,0009. Netflix no longer reports membership counts, so the nearest check is regional revenue growth, 10% in UCAN in the second quarter of 202610.
A one-time lever already pulled; demand held.
What paid sharing added; memberships are no longer reported, so regional revenue growth is the continuing check.
