Wealth ManagementWide moat

Morgan Stanley (MS) — moat facet

Morgan Stanley's wealth business has grown every year of the past decade and now earns 30 cents pre-tax on every dollar.

Wealth Management is the segment that turned Morgan Stanley from an investment bank into something steadier. It earned net revenues of $31,754 million and pre-tax income of $9,293 million in 20251, a pre-tax margin of about 29.3%2.

Fees on balances are three-fifths.

It serves individuals, families and businesses through three channels: advisor-led, self-directed and workplace3. It offers brokerage, advice, custody, cash management, lending and stock-plan administration4.

It is paid mostly on balances. In 2025 asset management revenue was $18,627 million, net interest income $7,911 million, transactional revenue $4,588 million and other revenue $628 million5. Asset management, the fees on fee-based and managed accounts, was about 58.7% of the total6.

The history is steady growth with two jumps. Revenue was $15,100 million in 2015, $17,242 million in 2018, $19,086 million in 2020 and $24,243 million in 202178910, the jump reflecting a full year of E*TRADE. It grew about 7.7% a year over the decade11 and never fell in any year shown.

Profitability has risen with scale. The pre-tax margin was about 22% in 2015 and about 23% in 202012, and 30.5% in the second quarter of 202613. Client assets were $7,381 billion at the end of 202514, and net new assets $356.3 billion15.

The latest quarter brought revenue of $8,856 million and pre-tax income of $2,697 million16. The net interest part is sensitive to rates: a 100 basis point fall would cost about $244 million a year17.

The segment's channels differ in what they pay. Advisor-led client assets were $5,715 billion at the end of 2025 and self-directed assets $1,667 billion18; fee-based assets, the part that pays an advisory fee, were $2,753 billion19. In the second quarter of 2026 net interest income in the segment was $2,254 million against $1,910 million a year earlier20, as deposits and loans grew.

From 2026 the segment's figures are cleaner. The firm now hedges advisers' deferred cash compensation with derivatives, so the mark-to-market no longer runs through Wealth Management revenue; the second quarter of 2025 had included $294 million of such gains21. In the first half of 2026 the segment earned $17,375 million of revenue and $5,288 million of pre-tax income, against $15,091 million and $4,151 million22, pre-tax income up about 27%23.

This is the wide moat in Morgan Stanley. The number that would change the verdict is net new assets: a year below $250 billion in rising markets would mean the franchise was gathering less and living on market gains.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Revenue $15.1bn (2015) to $31.8bn (2025); margin 30.5% in Q2 2026.

The annuity business; growth slower than client assets would mean the fee rate was slipping.
