⚠ Most of the Growth Was the MarketModerate threat
Morgan Stanley (MS) — threat to the moat
Seven-tenths of Morgan Stanley's 2025 growth in wealth client assets was the stock market, not new clients.
The client-asset total flatters the franchise because it is measured at market prices. Wealth Management client assets rose by $1,187 billion in 20251, and net new assets were $356.3 billion of that2. The rest, about 70%, was market appreciation and other changes3.
That matters for the fee line. Asset management revenue is a percentage of assets, so a fall in markets reduces it without a single client leaving. The firm says so plainly: its results "may be materially affected by market fluctuations"4.
The same arithmetic runs in reverse. In 2022, when markets fell, client assets ended the year at $4,187 billion5, and Wealth Management revenue barely moved, to $24,417 million from $24,243 million6, even though net new assets were $311.3 billion7.
The workplace figures show the same effect. Unvested stock in workplace plans rose to $534 billion from $475 billion in 20258 while participants fell, so the rise was the value of the shares rather than new employees. By June 2026 stock plan unvested assets were $658 billion9, up again with markets.
This is not a flaw in the moat; it is the shape of it. The part of the growth that belongs to Morgan Stanley is net new assets. A year in which net new assets fell below 3% of opening client assets would mean the franchise had stopped winning clients and was relying on the index.
