Fixed Income: The Smaller DeskNarrow moat
Morgan Stanley (MS) — moat facet
Morgan Stanley's bond desk grew 3.5% in 2025 while its equity desk grew 28%, and its value is the year the two move in opposite directions.
Morgan Stanley's fixed income desk is smaller than its equity desk and has grown more slowly. Fixed income revenue was $7,516 million in 2021, $9,022 million in 2022, $7,673 million in 2023, $8,418 million in 2024 and $8,716 million in 202512. In 2025 it grew about 3.5% while equity grew about 28%3.
The desk covers rates, credit, foreign exchange and commodities. In the fourth quarter of 2025 revenue fell on lower commodities results and weaker foreign exchange4. In the second quarter of 2026 it rose to $2,455 million from $2,180 million5, with credit the main driver6.
Fixed income is where the largest banks' balance sheets matter most, because clients want a dealer that can absorb large positions. Morgan Stanley, whose total assets were $1,420,270 million at the end of 20257, competes here on the size of the balance sheet it is willing to commit.
The desk's value is diversification. In 2022, when equity revenue fell, fixed income revenue rose to $9,022 million8, offsetting part of the decline.
The second-quarter increase came mainly from credit: the firm said fixed income revenue rose "reflecting higher results in Credit"9. Fixed income revenue was $2,455 million in the quarter10, less than half of equity's $6,300 million, which is roughly the ratio for the full year 2025 as well.
Its weight inside the segment says whether that diversification survives. It was about 26% in 202511; a fall much below that would mean the firm's markets business was becoming a single bet on equities.
Fixed income $7.5bn-$9.0bn a year since 2021.
The balancing desk; a falling share of ISG would concentrate the markets business on equities.
